Frits Barend encounters BBB’er after TV clash, surprised at reaction

Frits Barend met Femke Wiersma, the number two of BBB, this weekend in Heerenveen. She doesn’t seem angry about their TV clash. “I come in and she is the first to hug me.”

It was a bit bland: last week in the talk show HLF8, Frits Barend immediately demanded all sorts of strong points of view on tricky subjects from Femke Wiersma, the number two of the BoerBurgerBeweging. When she did not want to give it immediately, he started to grumble: “Now you are already a politician. I don’t like that about you.”

Spicy collision

It was a tough collision, says HLF8 star Sam Hagens. He asks Frits about it in yesterday’s broadcast. “Well, clash… We had a discussion and that should be possible at a talk show table, right? I thought so, yes,” said the 76-year-old former talk show host.

Frits still stands behind his question. “I said: ‘There are four major problems in our country right now and nitrogen is one of them, but so is the war in Ukraine.’ We are very involved in this and are reported daily. I said: ‘Do you think the Dutch government should also send missiles or tanks to Ukraine?’ Oh no, fighter jets.”

Heerenveen

Two days later, Frits and Femke happened to be face to face again, but this time at an event for charity. “It was a good cause against lymphoma, cycling in Heerenveen, ninety kilometers. Fortunately it was dry. We both accomplished it.”

It was a pleasant reunion with Femke, says Frits. He was quite surprised at her jovial demeanor. “I come in and the first person to hug me is Femke.”

‘BBB is doing well’

Frits emphasizes that he is not anti-BBB at all. “Well, I think that BBB is doing good things. I have already said here: ‘I live thanks to farmers.’ My parents went into hiding with farmers and I saw how kind they were to animals. Special people.”

He concludes: “There must be a future for that kind of farmers.”
