The Frisian village of Burgum has the honor of organizing this winter’s first marathon on natural ice tonight. A measurement by skating association KNSB showed on Wednesday morning that the minimum ice thickness of 3 centimeters, which is required to be able to write a marathon, was achieved at IJsvereniging Bergum.
Haaksbergen (IJSCH), Noordlaren (De Hondsrug) and Skating Association Nieuw-Buinen were also in the race. However, it was not possible to get the ice floor to the desired thickness last night.
Traditionally, a battle takes place between associations to organize the first natural ice competition for marathon skaters. The last marathon on Dutch natural ice was on December 26 last year in Noordlaren, with Maaike Verweij and Bart Hoolwerf as winners. Because the thaw set in afterwards, it remained with that one game.
