29-year-old Sam van Grondelle has been missing since yesterday. His friends and family have been looking for him for more than 24 hours, cycling every route Sam could have taken. The police see the missing person as very urgent and are doing everything they can to find him. “This is really not for him at all, we are very concerned.”
Sam cycles away from the ferries behind Amsterdam Central Station towards his house around 3:30 am. “They came from Skatecafé. The others had to go to the right and Sam was the only one to go to the left,” says good friend Frans, who is still searching hard today, together with other friends and Sam’s family.
“This really isn’t for him at all,” he says distraught. Around eight o’clock last night, the scenario that he would simply be away for a while or sleep somewhere else became very unlikely. “Even if your phone is empty, the moment has already passed that he would let you know.”
“It feels like looking for a needle in a haystack”
“We have already gone through all the routes that are conceivable and that he was able to cycle,” Frans continues. “But the scary thing is that it must have been a very busy place, because it is the center of the city. So someone must have already seen it.” They are searching hard, including for his bicycle. “But it also feels like looking for a needle in a haystack. There are more bicycles than people in this city.”
It feels increasingly scary: “Because with every hour that passes, the scenario becomes grimmer. But we try not to focus on that. We just have to keep searching and hoping and praying.”
