Friends actor Matthew Perry on addiction: ‘I almost died so many times’ | show

Matthew Perry tells in his book Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing — due out next month — about the ups and downs he’s been through in his life. In an interview with People magazine, the actor says that he was not allowed to start writing until he had kicked alcoholism and that he hopes to help people with the book.

“I wanted to share my story as soon as I stopped sliding into the dark side,” says the 53-year-old. “I had to wait to write until I was sober and no longer in contact with alcohol and addiction,” said Perry, who eventually wrote the book with a clear purpose. “The most important thing was that I was sure it would help people.”

In his memoirs, the friendsactor that he often hovered on the brink of death because of his addiction. “I think people reading it will be surprised at how bad I was at times and how many times I nearly died,” Perry told People. “I wrote that if I died it would shock people, but not surprise them. That’s a really scary thought to live with. So I hope that people can recognize themselves in it and know that this disease (addiction, ed.) can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter whether you are successful or not, the disease doesn’t matter.”
