Friedrich Mücke: Warschauer Strasse looks so much different today

Friedrich Mücke (41) has just had a huge hit in the cinema with “Wonderful”. Now the native of Berlin, who celebrated his 41st birthday on Saturday, is also coming to television with the series “Funeral for a Dog” (from March 17th on Sky). He plays an author who finds himself in a threesome.

Mücke has lived in Munich with his wife and colleague Barbara Romaner (44) and their three children since 2006.

For the premiere of “Funeral for a Dog” he came to Berlin for a few days – now a place of longing for him. We met Friedrich Mücke for an interview at Soho House in Mitte.

BZ: Back in Berlin – how does that feel?

Friedrich Mucke: That always feels good and is becoming increasingly emotional for me. For a while I thought it wasn’t all that bad. But the longer you’re away, the greater the longing for my hometown.

How do you notice that?

That just happens on my tours, especially in East Berlin I often stop because I notice changes and I remember what it used to be like. For example the Warschauer Strasse, which looks so much different today. It’s not about what’s worse or better, but it’s the memories that come up.

Do you want to come back to Berlin one day?

Not at the moment, but maybe in 20 or 30 years, which I’ve cockily ruled out for a long time. But I can now imagine a retirement in Berlin.

Many now feel that the war against Ukraine is even worse than the pandemic. Do you also feel fear?

That unsettles me, even if everything in my environment is the same as always. I mean: We’re doing an interview, I’m promoting an extremely good series and we had a great premiere in Berlin. But I would actually like to be with my family now. It’s currently a different feeling to go away – even if it’s just Munich-Berlin.

Do your children always know what’s going on in the world?

Yes. But we do make sure that it doesn’t become too much and that you aren’t overwhelmed by information.

Is it true that you were once an educator?

So I have a certificate that says educator. I have finished the training. I did an internship while I was still at school because I was always interested in social work. I even thought about becoming a street worker.

Although you are successful as an actor?

At first I just let acting come to me. I always thought, if nothing comes of it, I can become an educator again. I still think so because, as the saying goes, “Nothing is as fleeting as tomorrow’s applause.”

But do you have roles where you can bring this side to life?

Sure, now I’ve also brought my own three children through daycare. I am happy to be able to live this side in front of the camera again. But now I’m 41, and with that comes the dad roles.
