French senator, deputy head of the commission on international affairs, defense and issues of the armed forces and the commission on European affairs, Pierre Laurent, proposed to develop a collective security treaty for Russia and Europe, which would exclude Ukraine’s entry into NATO. This could become a guarantee of security for Moscow, Kiev and Europe, and France would become an independent mediator in the dialogue between the US and Russia, Laurent told the newspaper “News”.
In 2019, amendments to the Ukrainian constitution approved the country’s strategic course, which implies joining the EU and NATO. Now Kiev calls on the EU to decide on the timing. However, the Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that Ukraine’s entry into the alliance will increase the risks for Russia’s security.
Russia demanded guarantees of its own security from Western countries in connection with the aggressive rhetoric of a number of Western leaders, as well as in connection with the approach of NATO infrastructure and military to Russian borders. At the end of January Washington and Brussels answered they did not make concessions of principle for Russia. Moscow reacted to the American response.
