French Senate website hacked by pro-Russian hackers | Abroad

The Internet page of the French Senate has been inaccessible since Friday afternoon. The pro-Russian hacker collective NoName claims the attack after they took over management of the website of the French parliament in March.

“Access to the Senate website has been disrupted since this morning. Our team is fully mobilized to get everything up and running as soon as possible,” the Senate said on Twitter. Further information was not given. It appears to be a service attack that floods the website with requests and makes it difficult to access, said cybersecurity expert Nicolas Hernandez, president of Aleph Networks.

NoName claimed responsibility for the attack via Telegram, with a message in Russian and English denouncing French support for Ukraine. “We have read in the press that France is working with Ukraine on a new aid plan that may include weapons, as well as statements by Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, and we have blocked the French Senate site,” writes NoName.

At the end of March, the website of the French parliament, the Assemblée Générale, also fell into the hands of the collective for the same reasons.

Pro-Russian ‘hacktivists’

NoName was founded in March 2022 and consists of eighty pro-Russian hackers who attack online institutions from countries that support Ukraine. France is one of their favorite targets, and has already seen several attacks on government websites in recent months. On Wednesday, several French municipal websites were attacked by Russian ‘hacktivists’.

The pro-Russian collectives have experienced a huge increase since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They always act without asking for a ransom, unlike the classic hackers.
