On X, Macron thanks Borne for her “exemplary” work. “You carried out our project with the courage, dedication and determination of stateswomen,” it said. Borne will remain prime minister until a new government has been appointed, the statement added.
Borne, 62, has held her post since May 2022 and was France’s second female prime minister after Édith Cresson in the early 1990s. It is not yet known who will succeed Borne. According to rumors, this could be Gabriel Attal, the current Minister of Education. At 34 years old, he would be the youngest prime minister ever and also the first openly gay person in that position.
In her resignation letter, Borne states that it is “more necessary than ever to pursue reforms.” Borne also refers in the letter to her successes, such as the unpopular pension reform and the controversial migration law. The government reform should give a second wind to Macron’s second term in office.
