The French Puy du Fou wants to build a theme park of 60 hectares in Meppel. That is almost three times the size of Wildlands. The park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Performances and shows must be held about the history of Europe and in particular that of the Netherlands. It is not yet known what the concrete use of the park will be. At least there will be no attractions such as roller coasters.
If the park is actually going to be built, the aim is to realize it between 2027 and 2035. It is expected to attract 800,000 visitors per year. Puy du Fou expects that five years after completion some 800 people are working full-time, and that could rise to 1,500 employees after ten years.
Puy du Fou is a fully self-financed initiative. It does not work with government money and has no shareholders.
“Puy du Fou has never made it a secret that it wants to realize new parks in the world,” the park told RTV Drenthe. Meppel is now in the picture, Alderman Klaas de Vries confirms. Meppel is the only location the park has in mind for the Netherlands, and even for Northern Europe.
Puy du Fou is a theme park in France, which attracts about 2.5 million visitors every year. It has no rides, but historical shows are performed. Located in the Vendée, the park was opened in 1978. More than 2,000 people work there.
