French government does not agree to speed reduction on Paris ring road, but mayor continues | Abroad

The French government does not agree to a reduction in the speed limit on the Paris ring road from 70 km/h to 50 km/h, which the capital wants to introduce after the Olympic Games. This was stated by the French Minister of Transport Clément Beaune. Still, the city plans to continue with the plans.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea in the short term and we won’t make the decision by the end of 2024,” Beaune said on Franceinfo.

Paris plans to continue with the speed reduction on the ‘périphérique’, despite the government’s protest. This is what the mayor’s first deputy, Emmanuel Grégoire, says. “I can confirm that we are reducing the speed,” he said. “After all, a mayor has the right, within the framework of his powers, to reduce speed for safety or environmental reasons.”

Last month, the Paris city council’s plans to reduce speed on the ring road were announced. This decision is part of the city council’s climate plan 2024-2030.

The ring around Paris is 35 kilometers long. 1.5 million cars use the road every day, making it one of the busiest roads in Europe. In 2014, the maximum speed was already reduced from 80 to 70 km/h. The Parisian ring is also far from unknown for us Belgians, especially for those who have been on holiday to the south of France or to Spain.
