French fire brigade manages to fight one of two major forest fires in Gironde | Abroad

“After 11 days of battling the flames, all residents evacuated as a precaution have been allowed to return to their homes, with the support of the national police,” it said in a statement.

The other fire that broke out in the Gironde, in the Landiras region, and which burned 13,800 hectares of nature reserve, is not yet completely under control. For example, there is still a risk that the fires will flare up again. In the region, about a third of the population is not yet able to return to their homes.

A total of 36,000 residents had to evacuate due to the two fires, which destroyed a staggering 20,800 hectares of forest. Despite the magnitude of the wildfires, no casualties have been reported.

Earlier today, it was announced that a forest fire is also raging between Béziers and Carcassonne, also in the south of France. At least 150 hectares were in flames. The fire started on Friday in Aigne, where a heat wave warning is in effect. Despite the rapid deployment of 300 firefighters and four fire-fighting aircraft, the fire still spread.

By the end of the day, the fire service said the situation was “evolving favorably”. No homes were threatened and firefighters managed to save a vineyard from the flames. One firefighter suffered minor injuries in a fall.
