French film star dies after skiing accident

He embodied the legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent, played with stars such as Marion Cotillard and Audrey Tautou and is a two-time César prizewinner. Now only the memories of him remain.

France mourns the loss of one of its greatest film stars. Gaspard Ulliel died on Wednesday at the age of 37 after a skiing accident.

This was announced by his family in a brief statement. Ulliel was seriously injured in a skiing accident in La Rosière (Savoie) on Tuesday (January 18). This was confirmed by several sources from the AFP news agency. He was flown to the University Hospital (CHU) in Grenoble by helicopter, but later succumbed to his injuries there.

Prime Minister Jean Castex tweeted: “Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema and cinema with him. They loved each other dearly. From now on, it will be with a heavy heart that we will see him in his best roles and meet that certain look.”

Ulliel was born on November 25, 1984 near Paris. He was already in front of the camera at the age of eleven, and in 2003 and 2004 he was nominated for the César as best young actor. A year later he finally got the award – for his role in the World War II drama “Mathilde – Eine Große Liebe” alongside Audrey Tautou.

Ulliel gained international fame for his portrayal of the famous cannibal in 2007’s Hannibal Rising.

He held the César as best male leading actor in his hands in 2017 for “Simply the End of the World”. In the film he starred alongside Marion Cotillard and Léa Seydoux. In 2015 he was again nominated for a César for his leading role in the biopic “Saint Laurent”. Most recently, the 37-year-old had a leading role in the Marvel television series Moon Knight, which will be shown on Disney+ from the end of March.

Ulliel was also booked as a model and was the face for a Chanel aftershave. The Frenchman leaves behind his longtime girlfriend Gaëlle Piétri and their son Orso (almost 5).
