Paris Saint-Germain player Idrissa Gueye has to answer to the ethics committee of the French football association FFF, because he is said to have refused to take part in an action against homophobia last weekend.
The 32-year-old Gueye would have refused to play in a rainbow shirt. After the fuss, the Ethics Committee of the FFF wants the Senegalese to “come and clarify his situation”.
Gueye did not participate in the away match against Montpellier (0-4 victory) last Saturday, in which PSG played with special numbers in the colors of the rainbow. The French champion wore that shirt on the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia.
Initially, the midfielder seemed to be missing due to an injury, but that was contradicted by his trainer Mauricio Pochettino. According to Le Parisien Gueye was also missing last year when there was a similar campaign against homophobia. The club then gave stomach problems as the reason.
Gueye received support on Tuesday from Senegalese President Macky Sall, who said that “Gueye’s religious beliefs must be respected”. The ninety-time international of Senegal is Muslim.
Roxana Maracineanu, the French sports minister, was very critical. “Wearing a rainbow shirt may be a detail, but it’s an important symbolic gesture that helps educate our youth. I think it’s sad,” she told Le Parisien†
