French donates 250 war letters to In Flanders Fields Museum

While cleaning up her parental home, Aurore Fauré-Cazeneuve discovered nearly 250 war letters on May 21, 2021. It concerns the letters that her grandfather Ernest Cazeneuve and her great-uncle Alfred Cazeneuve wrote to the home front during the First World War. This gave the woman a unique insight into her family’s war past. She even discovered hidden messages in the white spaces. In invisible ink, Ernest Cazeneuve wrote about his plans to escape after the Germans captured him near Dikkebus. To be on the safe side, he also wrote the invisible text in dialect and in mirror writing.

Aurore Fauré-Cazeneuve initially intended to set up an exhibition about the letters herself. In the autumn of 2022, however, she visited the Ypres region and of course the In Flanders Fields Museum. As a result of that experience, she decided to donate the original collection to the museum.
