French and German police wary of riots at May Day demonstrations | Abroad

French trade unions have called for renewed protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms. Authorities expect up to 650,000 participants in more than 300 demonstrations across the country, for which 12,000 police officers have been called.

About 100,000 demonstrators are expected in Paris. Drones are being deployed in the capital and other cities to monitor the situation.

In Germany, supermarkets, shops and banks traditionally barricade their windows for fear of flying stones and graffiti. The police and aid workers in the capital Berlin are expected to be pelted with bottles, fireworks and stones, the newspaper ‘Bild’ reports on the basis of a risk analysis by the authorities. Buildings symbolizing capitalism would also be targeted.

In Berlin, 6,300 police officers are on the move on Monday. More than thirty demonstrations have been registered.
