In front of more than 1,000 spectators in the Freiburg Unihalle, the Breisgau women wanted to build on their strong performance in the third final game on Wednesday. In an exciting game, the Freiburg women defeated the Rheinland Lions in overtime and, with a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, fought for a good starting position for the fourth game.

However, the guests from Bergisch Gladbach got off to a better start and took a 6-0 lead. With constantly changing defensive formations, they tried to constantly present the Freiburg women with new challenges. But then the kingfishers got into the game better and used their chances more consistently. The hostesses were also good on the defensive and often forced their opponents to throw hasty shots. Shortly before the end of the first quarter, the Eisvogel managed to take the lead for the first time thanks to Shiori Yasuma’s three-pointer. In the first quarter break, the teams said goodbye with a performance-related 21:21 draw.

Freiburg came back strong and put in a four-point run right at the start of the second quarter. The guests from Bergisch Gladbach then took their first break. The Eisvogel didn’t let this put them off and continued to score: Lina Sunday with a three pointer to 30:23. In the middle of the second half of the game, the Eisvogel could even take the lead for the first time with ten points – 35:25. Freiburg’s Lina Sonntag really got going and scored with her fourth three-pointer to make it 45:29. The Freiburg women also showed a convincing performance on the defensive, so that they were able to extend their lead to 57:31 by the half-time break.

In the third half of the game, both teams continued to fight with full commitment and the guests from Bergisch Gladbach were able to make the game more balanced than in the first half. The Rheinland Lions reduced their deficit slightly to 55:75.

In the fourth quarter, however, the Breisgau women left no doubt and confidently brought their clear lead over time. In the end, Harald Janson’s team, who couldn’t be in the hall himself because of a corona infection, celebrated a 95:65 (57:31) victory and thus secured the first championship title in the club’s history.
