“So tenants have to wait longer to make their home and home seekers more sustainable for an available and affordable rental home for longer,” said the joint statement of the Corporations in Drenthe.
According to the corporations, the government parties leave the tenants in the cold, because the freezing of the rental prices is a sham solution. “It seems like a nice windfall, but it means that many homes cannot be improved and made more sustainable. And that ensures higher energy costs.” In addition, National Institute for Budget Information (Nibud) conducted a study in November that shows that a rent increase of 4.5 percent in 2025 is in most cases affordable.
At the bottom of the line, much remains unclear, because no compensation measures for corporations have yet been proposed. Woonbond, a representative of tenants, proposes to reduce the profit tax for housing associations, so that they still have enough money to build new social rental homes. For the corporations themselves it is not yet clear whether such a measure is sufficient to achieve the same goals.
The tenants’ federation Zuidoost Drenthe says it is positively surprised by the intended plan for the rental freezing for social rental properties. “For a large part of the tenants, a substantial rental increase brought a lot of worries. We are happy that they are no longer confronted with this.”
