Freek Vonk paid a surprise visit to Zoetermeer for this

On Saturday 3 June, television presenter and biologist Freek Vonk paid a surprise visit to Zoetermeer. Not for a visit to the Haga Hospital with his leg full of larvae, but for a festive moment.

Scouting group John McCormickgroep in Zoetermeer exists 77 years. Because of the anniversary, Freek helped the youth scouts with the construction of an insect hotel at the club building in the Van Tuyllpark. And the nice thing was: apart from two employees, no one knew that the popular biologist would come by.

Just a hole in the agenda

Spokesman Kim Fokkelman of Scouting Netherlands says: “Freek Vonk is ambassador of Scouting Netherlands. Like scouts, he marvels at the animal kingdom and nature. He almost always travels for his work, but, precisely on the jubilee day of the Zoetermeer scouting group, he still had a hole in his agenda for a visit. All scouts were overjoyed when they saw Freek Vonk.”

During the anniversary party, the scouts took part in a ditch safari, birding excursion, beekeeper workshop and the construction of an insect hotel. “Freek explained the importance of bees and insects for human existence. He also explained how to build an insect hotel and a group photo was taken of the youth members together with their idol.”
