Freedom in Pekela celebrated in a modest way (Due to war in Ukraine and short preparation time)

Although the municipality of Pekela celebrates on King’s Day and Liberation Day, this is done in a modest way because of the war situation in Ukraine and the short preparation time.

Gerard Brunink explains: “The only recent lifting of the restrictive corona measures by the government and the war situation in Ukraine have made the Orange Liberation Committee Pekela decide to put together a modest and adapted program this year.”

The short preparation time also plays an important role. “There is not enough time to consult with the many associations, organizations and agencies that play a role every year to ensure that events and activities take place in a careful and responsible manner.”

Orange liberation concert

The OBCP is the organizer of the Orange Liberation Concert that will be held on Saturday 30 April in the Dutch Reformed Church in Nieuwe Pekela with the cooperation of the Groninger Christian Men’s Choir Albatros. A delegation will also be present at the local Remembrance Day on May 4 and wreaths will be laid at the monuments in the Pekela’s. In addition, the OBCP will be represented at a few locations where starting moments are held in the context of the celebration of King’s Day.

Does this mean that there will be no further celebration and commemoration activities in the municipality of Pekela? Certainly! Various activities have already been registered with the municipality. Neighborhood sports and cultural associations have taken the initiative to this end, just like in previous years, and are thus continuing a tradition. However, these activities will not take place this year under the umbrella of the OBCP and will therefore not be included in the publicity campaign, such as the annual publication of a free door-to-door newspaper.

Consultation with mayor Jaap Kuin

The OBCP had consultations with mayor Jaap Kuin last week and explained its decision and program. The activities to be held in Pekela in the context of the celebration and commemoration will be made known to the inhabitants by the municipality as much as possible via the usual channels.
