Free technical language courses for computer science and mathematics

The Institute for Interactive Systems (ISy) of the Technical University of Lübeck is now offering new free online German courses on its learning platform FutureLearnLab (www.futurelearnlab.de/hub) at.

The digital self-learning courses are aimed at refugees who are interested in studying technology. In the courses, they learn or repeat basic knowledge of computer science and mathematics and at the same time expand their knowledge of German in these areas.

The technical language courses were created as part of the DAAD program “Digital Campus – Digitally prepared for studies” and are funded by the DAAD and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Project manager Stefanie Bock reports:

There is rarely an opportunity in general German courses to acquire technical language skills, for example in the STEM field. That’s why we want to support refugees with our free online courses.

Till Bornemann, Instructional Designer in the project added:

Motivated participants who already have a good general knowledge of German can build on this in our courses. There you will receive language support, for example in the form of glossaries, transcripts and video subtitles and a large number of exercises for reading and listening comprehension as well as for grammar and vocabulary. Prospective students and students benefit equally from this.

Very good knowledge of German is recommended at least B1 level for the course “Fit for Studies – Computer Science Basics + German” or at least B2 level for the two courses “Fit for your studies – Basic Mathematics and Advanced + German”.
