Frederiksoord colony houses are testing new technology to store heat

Two colony houses in Frederiksoord are part of a new experiment. The houses are heated using a so-called thermal storage in the garden. According to the initiator Hilco Broekman, it is unique and has not been done in this way before in the Netherlands.

“It may sound very strange, but this gives me energy,” he says.

On the Hooiweg in Frederiksoord are the two colony houses where contractor Hilco Broekman can pioneer. The cottages are built as self-sufficient as possible, which means that they are not connected to utilities.

This has already been done with regard to the water connection. The houses have a water storage with a filter so that drinking water is made from rainwater. In addition, the houses use a kind of cesspool instead of a connection to the sewer. There is an arrangement of solar panels in the garden and something is now being added for the heat in the house: a thermal storage. “Then they will soon be able to completely disconnect from the electricity grid,” says Broekman.

What exactly does that mean, such a thermal storage? We explain that in the video
