Football icon Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78. A German tells about it Bild.
Beckenbauer is considered one of the best soccer players of all time. In his career, he won World Cup gold in the shirt of West Germany both as a player (1974) and as a coach (1990).
At the club team level, Beckenbauer represented Bayern Munich for a long time. There he won three times the European Cup, which was the predecessor of the Champions League. In addition, he won two Ballon d’Or, i.e. the Golden Ball.
The legend known by the nickname “Der Kaiser” revolutionized football with his playing style. He is remembered for the so-called libero position.
Beckenbauer’s health had deteriorated significantly in recent years, and he was not seen in public for a long time.
According to Bild, the “Emperor” underwent heart operations in recent years and suffered from Parkinson’s disease and the resulting dementia. He died on Sunday.
