For Bastian Schweinsteiger himself it is “a great honor.” The ex-Bayern star will follow in Franz Beckenbauer’s footsteps for a golf tournament.
For Franz Beckenbauer, who died in January, it was a project close to his heart: the golf tournament in aid of the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. It couldn’t take place last year because the 1974 world champion wasn’t feeling well at the time.
“After 33 very successful tournaments, the ‘Kaiser Cup’ at the Quelleness & Golf Resort Bad Griesbach will be discontinued in its well-known form,” the Eagles Charity Club, with which Beckenbauer always organized the event, told t-online at the time and gave the following reasons : “Franz Beckenbauer, the eponymous emperor, has to step back” (read more about this here).
After more than three decades, the “Kaiser Cup” was over. Now, after the death of the “Emperor”, a new arrangement has been found – and a successor who will take over the patronage. As “Bild” reports, Bastian Schweinsteiger will take over the task.
“There is no better patron”
The 2014 world champion: “It is a great honor for me to continue the tradition and legacy of this tournament by Franz Beckenbauer.” Schweinsteiger is said to have gotten the okay from Beckenbauer and his wife Heidi themselves.
“There is no better patron than Bastian and no better venue than Bad Griesbach with its great places,” Heidi Beckenbauer is quoted as saying by “Bild”. “Bastian will carry on Franz’s golfing spirit and we as the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation can do so much good with it. That’s entirely in Franz’s spirit.”
The “Bastian Schweinsteiger Cup” is now scheduled to take place from July 19th to 21st, 2024 – at the “Beckenbauer Golf Course”.
