Fransien suffers less from mouse plague, but concerns remain due to waste dumping

Two months ago, the living situation of Fransien and her daughters was unbearable. At that time they caught about 10 mice per day, there were several nests in the rental house of Intermaris and the pungent smell of mouse urine caused health problems in the family. Meanwhile, the housing association is working hard to remedy the structural defects and the family notices that there are fewer mice. “We only catch two a day now.”

Fransien Koster has lived with her two daughters Demie (23), Ronie (11) and her five dogs at the Kluut in Hoorn for almost seven years. The family is not well off, but they enjoy living in the Kersenboogerd and rent the house from housing corporation Intermaris. The family never experienced any problems with mice, until the misery started six months ago.

For a long time the family had to wait for help from Intermaris, but a lot has already been done to the house. “The old kitchen has been replaced and an emergency block has been installed,” says Demie. The new kitchen unit is expected to be installed at the beginning of October and then the family hopes that they will finally no longer be bothered by the mouse infestation.

“In terms of health, we are also much better and I have almost no problems anymore”

“Compared to two months ago, we now catch about two mice a day,” continues Fransien’s daughter. “Of course that is much less than before.” Demie is therefore happy that the end seems in sight. “In terms of health, we are also doing much better and I hardly have any problems anymore. I do think it is a shame that so much fuss had to precede it before Intermaris started to help us.”

Despite the fact that the mouse nuisance in the house has been reduced and Intermaris is working on the house, Fransien is still concerned about food that residents put down in the alley. “I happened to be walking down the alley and then saw that a neighbor had put cat food in the street in several places,” explains Fransien. “He had even put a bowl of water next to it, and that during a mouse infestation.”

Group Tonnaer therefore suggested advice questions to the college and they agree with the faction that action must be taken quickly. After the summer holidays, the municipality, together with a contractor, will refurbish the greenery behind the houses and remove the dumping. The local residents of De Kluut also received a letter with the advice not to feed animals in the outdoor area.

HVC: 8 reports of mouse nuisance

In the period from January 2022 to June 2022, HVC has had several residents in
had a total of eight reports about mice nuisance at various houses on the Kluut in the Kersenboogerd. According to the municipality, HVC has taken action on this by placing boxes of mouse poison and mouse traps and advising residents on how to prevent the nuisance.

Intermaris, together with the municipality, also called on the Knowledge and Advice Center for Animal Pests (KAD). The Wageningen research institute is currently investigating how to get rid of the mouse plague in the neighborhood as efficiently as possible.

“If it appears from the KAD report that further actions by Intermaris or municipality are needed, we will of course pick it up,” says a spokesperson for Intermaris.
