Frans (68) had to flee home due to fire: ‘Very scary’

It was an exciting night for 68-year-old Frans from Mierlo. Due to a car fire, his conifer hedge caught fire. He had to leave the house with his wife. “I was afraid our house would catch fire too.”

A car and a van burned out last night at the Streep in Mierlo. That happened around three o’clock in the morning. The fire brigade arrived quickly, but could not prevent the car and van from being lost.

The fire then spread to Frans’s conifer hedge. “We were sleeping. The neighbor woke me up with the doorbell. I quickly woke up my wife. We stood outside for more than 45 minutes,” says Frans. “You don’t expect this in Mierlo.”

“My wife hasn’t slept a wink anymore.”

“I was very scared. It’s very scary.” The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading. “That’s a blessing in disguise. We were very shocked,” says Frans, still sleepy. “My wife hasn’t slept a wink anymore.”

According to a local resident, the fire was caused deliberately and the perpetrator targeted the car. The owner of the cars, Frans’ neighbor, says in English that he ‘knows absolutely nothing’. The police have not yet reported anything about the cause of the fire.

“It still stinks terribly.”

Other local residents also say they are quite shocked. “We heard loud bangs,” says an elderly neighbor. There is still glass and ash at the site of the fire on Sunday afternoon. “It still stinks terribly. I hope they will come and clean it up tomorrow,” sighs Frans.
