After their relegation from the Bundesliga, the basketball players of the Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt addressed their own supporters with an open letter.
“A descent is associated with severe cuts – emotionally and financially. A direct resurgence is not a sure-fire success either. We will have to reposition ourselves and do everything we can to come back stronger,” said the letter published by the club. One does not want to leave the “successful path” of promoting young talent.
After an away win by Braunschweig in Gießen, relegation has been certain since Wednesday evening. Nevertheless, the Skyliners tried to get a Bundesliga license. “The descent concerns us all: you fans and partners, the team, the coaches and the office. We all burn for this club and the descent affects each and every one of us,” the letter said.
Those responsible for the club claimed to have done everything: “Somehow it was like we were constantly stuck in quicksand: whenever we thought we’d get the curve and pull ourselves out of the mess, something new happened that threw us back again.” The Skyliners stated that the remaining goal was to win the unofficial Hessen championship. On Sunday (3 p.m.) there is a home game against the Giessen 46ers, who are also about to be relegated.
