Eintracht Frankfurt heavily criticized the referee team after the 2-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. The referee then admitted a mistake.

Referee Sascha Stegemann once again admitted errors in the VAR review in the much-discussed penalty decision in the top Bundesliga game Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Dortmund (1: 2). “The check process was aborted too early”said Stegemann on Sunday (October 30th, 2022) at Sport1.

A shove by Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi against Jesper Lindstrom, who was ready to score, was not punished with a penalty. “In the check process, four standard cameras were used. The foul – yes or no – was only decided based on these four camera perspectives.” This was a mistake. On Monday there should be a constructive review between him and video referee Robert Kampka.

“Clear penalty and a red card”

Frankfurt’s sports director Markus Krösche got angry because of a scene in the 42nd minute. “If we have this video assistant, then just use it. If you don’t use it, my God, then let it be, stomp the basement.”said Krosche.

Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner was also dissatisfied: “I saw the pictures and it was a clear penalty and a red card because it wasn’t an offense in the fight for the ball. I think the referees are the poorest then. He’s waiting for the signal from VAR and that doesn’t come . It’s a shame, it’s not the first time. If he doesn’t have the TV picture, then you don’t need him anymore.”

Stegemann did not decide on a penalty, but on an immediately following handball. There was a free kick for BVB.

Krosche: “That’s a joke”

“These are things that really get on my nerves”said Krosche. “We have this assistant. Then ask him. And if you then change your mind, that’s perfectly fine with me. But that’s a joke.” Krösche said he did not know whether Stegemann asked.

The Eintracht sports director basically criticized the video evidence: “We’ve had this discussion a couple of times. We’ve talked about it 840 times with the clubs, with the referees. I have no idea, I don’t know what they do, especially how they use it. Sometimes they use it sometimes not. We can’t do it like that, we don’t need it like that. Then I’d rather say the referee made a wrong decision.”

Eintracht coach Oliver Glasner in an interview after the 2-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund’s offensive man Adeyemi, on the other hand, reacted calmly to the much-discussed scene. “Not a foul for me. I don’t know, it felt like I was body to body with him. That’s why I thought the referee was right.”

Stegemann admits mistakes

Stegemann had already admitted a mistake on Saturday evening and said that by viewing the video recordings he would have decided on a penalty. The dilemma of the video assistant referee (VAR) lies between speed and safety, Stegemann almost stated.

Referee Sascha Stegemann said he had first “not recognizing a clear foul and no clear impulse” be able. “When I now see the pictures with the corresponding camera angles, it is clear that Eintracht Frankfurt should have been awarded a penalty.”
