Before his period at Heracles Almelo, Wormuth worked for ten years at the German football association DFB, as a teacher of the trainer training and as a trainer / coach of Germany under-20. FC Groningen will present Wormuth after the end of this season.
As technical manager of Heracles, Mark-Jan Fledderus appointed Wormuth in 2018 as head coach of the club from Almelo. “It’s no secret that I find Frank an interesting trainer,” says the current technical director of the Pride of the North. “It is not for nothing that I appointed him to Heracles four years ago. During my period as technical manager in Almelo I was able to work with him excellently.”
After the management of FC Groningen had decided not to extend the expiring contract with Danny Buijs and to continue with a new head coach after this season, it also quickly became clear that Wormuth was an important candidate for this. “Nevertheless, as a full management team, we have conducted a careful process by initially drawing up a profile of the new head coach of FC Groningen and then holding the talks together,” explains Fledderus. “That’s what we came up with at Frank: he has experience, works in a structured way and he can develop teams and players individually and he likes to work with young talents. In the past three years at Heracles, he has shown that he can link an appealing playing style to development and results. We are pleased that we were able to convince Frank to choose FC Groningen.”
Focus on remaining months of the season
After this season, Fledderus says he wants to go deeper into the choice of the German coach at Wormuth’s presentation. “This is not the time to elaborate further on that. We have agreed that we want to focus on the remaining months of this season at both FC Groningen and Heracles Almelo. Both clubs still have a lot to fight for and both Danny and Frank must be given the peace and space to finish their current job well.”
Wormuth says in a first reaction: „Of course I am happy that I can become the head coach of FC Groningen after this season. We will work together to achieve the goals of the club and my own ideas certainly fit in that context, but now is not the time to go into further detail. I don’t want to get in the way of my esteemed colleague Danny Buijs and just as importantly: I want to end my period at Heracles on a good note. Heracles has given me a wonderful opportunity as a trainer abroad and I will always be grateful to the club for that. It is everything to me to finish my period in Almelo well and then a great new challenge awaits in Groningen from the summer.
