“When small children are sick, you always have to be concerned,” says Vandenbroucke. “RSV can be a very annoying disease for small children. Adults are not much bothered by it. It feels like a cold to us, but as adults we have to be very careful with our children.” The minister asks to stay at home if you feel sick. “Certainly children better stay home if they feel sick. Do not send them going to parties with other kids, it’s a matter of being careful.”

emergency measures

Whether hospitals are under pressure again shortly after the corona pandemic? “It is heavy. That is why we should be very grateful to the hospital staff and help them where possible.” The Minister of Health has extended the emergency measures until the end and hospitals will receive extra resources for support staff. “Retired people can help in hospitals with a very favorable tax regime. work without restrictions.”

“We try to help, but there are no miracle solutions,” the minister admits. “We know that these measures only work in the short term. In the long term, we need to invest much more in our health care, but also do things differently.”

At the moment, the pressure is greatest on the paediatrics department (the department for children). But the minister emphasizes that a hospital bed is still available for children in need. “Even though it’s very busy.”
