Several leading trade associations in France have asked the government in an open letter to remove the Shein, Temu and Aliexpress platforms from the Internet. The background is far-reaching violations of European regulations and a legislative proposal currently discussed in the Senate to contain ultra-fast fashion.

According to a letter available on Tuesday, the CONSIL DU Commerce de France (CDCF) and the Confédération des Commerces de France (CCF) accuse the affected platforms massive violations of EU specifications. “85 to 95 percent of the products offered on Temu, Shein and Aliexpress do not meet the applicable standards,” says reference to European studies.

On Monday, the two associations together with fourteen other industry representatives and more than 230 brands – together around 80 percent of the industry – had sent an open letter to the French government. In it, they ask the DGCCRF competition authority to initiate a procedure for removing or blocking the platforms.

According to the signatories, the legal means are already available. The French Consumer Protection Act enables the DGCCRF to arrange the suspension or complete blocking of access to a website for serious and repeated violations.

Shein is particularly the focus of a new legislative proposal, which is directed against Ultra-Fast-Fashion and is currently being negotiated in the Senate French. The aim is to regulate environmentally harmful business models and create fair competitive conditions.

The trading associations criticize: “A French dealer who would sell 94 percent of non -compliant products – 66 percent of which are classified as dangerous – would have to close immediately.” These figures are based on official government data and are intended to illustrate the extent of the violations. Equal treatment with domestic providers is required.

In addition, the problem is not only limited to security aspects. Among other things, the platforms would leave VAT, bypass customs fees, disregard statutory sales sales and violate labeling and transparency requirements- to the disadvantage of local retailers, responsible marketplaces as well as small and medium-sized companies.
