France’s record goalscorer Giroud is out against Germany

No re-nomination

France’s record goalscorer (for statistics) Olivier Giroud is missing from the “Équipe Tricolore” in the classic international match on Tuesday (9 p.m./ARD) against the German national team in Dortmund. As the French association FFF announced on Friday, the striker injured his left ankle during Thursday’s European Championship qualifier against Ireland (2-0).

But it was only a slight sprain. National coach Didier Deschamps decided not to be nominated for the runner-up’s squad. Giroud, who plays for AC Milan, left the field against Ireland in the 26th minute after suffering a blow to his ankle.

Marcus Thuram, who moved from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Inter Milan in the summer, came to replace him and scored his first international goal shortly after the break. With five wins from five games and 11-0 goals in qualifying, France is clearly on course for a ticket to the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
