France’s Nikola Karabatić breaks European Championship record

Nikola Karabatić showed his best side in the French victory over the Croatians. He even broke a record at the final whistle.

The Frenchman Nikola Karabatić has reached the top of the all-time top scorer list at the European Handball Championships in Germany. In the main round game against Croatia (34:32), the former Kiel player scored his 289th goal at a European Championship and replaced Iceland’s Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson as number one. The current coach of Bundesliga club VfL Gummersbach scored 288 goals in European Championship finals in his career.

“I’m one goal ahead of my very dear, good friend Goggi Sigurdsson, but I know that Mikkel Hansen will be ahead of me at some point,” said Karabatić: “I’m happy to be the top scorer. But it’s not worth it as much as a medal. My focus is to win something with my team.”
