The French cement manufacturer Lafarge is facing proceedings on suspicion of terrorist financing because of its now discontinued business in Syria.
As it was said from judicial circles on Saturday night, the French anti-terror prosecutor’s office is demanding a trial. This concerns alleged acts between 2012 and 2014. Seven people from the then management level or the security department of Lafarge as well as two Syrian middlemen should also be in the dock. Investigations into allegations of crimes against humanity are continuing, it said. Lafarge is now part of the Swiss building materials group Holcim.
Despite the civil war, the cement manufacturer operated a factory in northern Syria until 2014. To maintain business, the local company paid millions of dollars in funds to armed groups. At that time, the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia, smaller Islamist groups and Kurdish groups were active in northern Syria.
