The last release in Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series was almost a year ago, and it seems it will soon be that time again: “Fragments – Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997)” is scheduled to be released on January 27, 2023, and a look behind the scenes at Dylan 30th album Time Out Of Mind (1997). As a foretaste you can already listen to an alternative version of the song “Love Sick”.
“Time Out of Mind” was released in 1997 after an unusually long break from songwriting for Dylan. The last album with original compositions, “Under the Red Sky”, was released in 1990, followed by two albums with folk traditionals, “Good As I Been To You” (1992) and “World Gone Wrong” (1993).
In August 1996, Dylan went to Teatro Studio in Oxnard, California with producer Daniel Lanois to record new demos. This was followed in 1997 by sessions at Miami’s Criteria Studio with numerous session musicians and members of Dylan’s touring band. There the final album took shape. Fragments contains alternate versions from both the Teatro and Criteria sessions. There are also live versions from the years 1998 to 2001.
The full album “Time Out of Mind” is available as a new remix by sound engineer Michael H. Brauer: he remixed the songs without the effects added by Lanois, resulting in a more intimate alternative version. A bonus disc also includes original versions of songs that didn’t make it onto Time Out of Mind, such as Mississippi. These have already appeared in the Bootleg Series on Volume 8, “Tell Tale Signs”.
“Fragments” is released as a standard version on 2 CDs or 4 LPs, alternatively there is a deluxe box set with 5 CDs or 10 LPs to buy. The deluxe LP version is directly above bodylan.com available. The standard release contains the remix of “Time Out of Mind” and 12 selected demos and outtakes.
It’s the 17th installment in the Bootleg Series, which regularly features outtakes, demos and live footage from Dylan’s career. Most recently, “Bob Dylan – Springtime In New York/The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (1980 – 1985)” was released in September 2021.
