Four women in Spain murdered in barely 24 hours: “Macho terror” | Abroad

Four women have been murdered by men in Spain in 24 hours. Spain’s interior minister condemned male violence against women as “macho terror”.

Fernando Grande-Marlaska said after an emergency meeting in Madrid that the government will do everything to put an end to such crimes. All police departments in the country were called upon to do more to protect women and children.

The fight against intimate partner violence has become a serious topic in Spain. Courts give strict sentences, media pay a lot of attention to it. Spain also has special prosecutor’s offices and courts that deal with violence against women.

Pregnant with another man

Yesterday, a 52-year-old man near Toledo killed his 32-year-old wife, who was pregnant by another man. That same day in Madrid, a man stabbed his ex’s 20-year-old daughter to death. Another woman was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in Bilbao and today a 22-year-old woman died in Benidorm after falling from the sixth floor. Her boyfriend of the same age has been arrested.

In this month alone, ten femicides have happened, according to the newspaper ‘La Vanguardia’. According to official figures, 44 women were killed last year in violent attacks by their husbands or ex-partners. Spain has 47 million inhabitants.
