In the Liège city of Huy, a young black man was attacked by a group of people in their twenties at the beginning of this month. The victim was beaten and racial slurs were hurled at him. The police have now arrested four suspects.
The brutal attack happened on the night of 9 to 10 June at around 01:00 on the Place Verte in Huy. The victim, Guy Nguea, testified on Instagram a few days ago about the senseless violence. “Unfortunately I have become the target of a group of racist people,” he wrote. The attackers gave Guy some hard blows, choked him and spat on him. “They also filmed everything without me knowing and made racist remarks. Their intention was to spread this video on social media and ridicule me,” said Guy.
The shocking images show how the face of the victim is completely bloodied. The attackers call him an “old monkey” and ask where he comes from and if he wants more beatings.
House searches
Some individuals decided to track down the perpetrators after the incident, which sparked even more violence in Huy and the neighboring village of Ampsin last weekend.
As part of the investigation, the police carried out a series of house searches on Thursday morning. Four suspects were arrested, the Liège public prosecutor’s office reports. It concerns four men with an age between 20 and 22 years. Three suspects are in pre-trial detention, the fourth has been released on parole. Three of the four accused have been charged with attempted murder.
“Following these facts, security on the Place Verte has been strengthened and will continue to be so in the future,” said police chief Jean-Marie Dradin. “Racist acts have no place in Huy,” he concludes.
