Four packages thrown over Andenne prison walls, including (at least) one with weapon and ammunition: “Fear of escape with hostage-taking” | Interior

On Sunday, four packages were thrown over the walls of the Andenne prison, in the province of Namur. One of the packages was intercepted and was found to contain a firearm and ammunition. Detainees managed to hide the three other packages. ‘Sudinfo’ reports this and has been confirmed to Belga from a good source.

The four suspicious packages were thrown in from outside the prison walls on Sunday afternoon. Three of the packages ended up in the courtyard, a fourth in a place that is not accessible to the detainees. When guards opened that last package, it turned out to contain a revolver, two magazines and ammunition.

Prisoners ran off with the three packages that ended up in the courtyard. “From there it was easy to get them into the cells through windows that are not secured,” it sounds from a good source.

“Fear of escape with hostage taking”

The contents of the packages held by the detainees are unknown. On Wednesday, staff and management will discuss the incident together. ‘Sudinfo’ writes that it is feared that an escape with hostage-taking is being prepared.

The penitentiary administration wants security measures, a spokeswoman reports to Belga. The administration takes the incident very seriously. “Several packages were thrown to the jail on Sunday. A firearm and bullets were found in it. We immediately secured the prison by going to the courtyards and searching every detainee,” the spokeswoman said.

The police were also sent to prison. The police officers have carried out various actions, such as inspections with dogs and body searches. The Namur public prosecutor’s office has been informed of the facts and a judicial investigation has been opened.

“We have again urged the Buildings Agency to secure the buildings by installing nets and grilles. Prison management has scheduled meetings throughout the week with local police, unions and detainees’ representatives to answer their questions,” the spokeswoman said.
