Four more detainees detained after anti-Zwarte Piet action in Emmen

Four people are still detained after they were arrested last Monday during a protest against Zwarte Piet in the council chamber in Emmen. Police are still investigating their identity, a spokesperson said.

Yesterday, five demonstrators were still detained, but the police have been able to identify the identity of one of them. Seven other protesters have already been released.

Twelve activists of Extinction Rebellion disrupted the council meeting in Emmen, because they want the appearance of the Pieten at the Sinterklaas entry in Emmen to be adjusted. They were arrested for breaking the peace in the local area, because they remained seated after repeated calls to leave the council chamber. The climate activists expressed their solidarity with the anti-racism movement and the actions of Kick Out Zwarte Piet.

The municipality of Emmen is taking extra security measures around the council meeting today in response to last Monday’s action.
