In Strasbourg, in northeastern France, four family members, including two children, were killed this morning after a fire broke out in their apartment. “There are four fatalities, two adults and two children. We have opened an investigation into the exact cause of the fire,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released. According to several neighbors, the family members were of Syrian origin and lived in an apartment building belonging to the social housing company Ophéa. The two children would be about seven or eight years old.

The fire broke out early in the morning in the Neuhof district. The fire brigade arrived quickly, but for the family all help came too late. The residents of the building were evacuated. “The smell of smoke woke us up. We went outside and we heard the mother, father and children screaming,” said one resident. She immediately notified the fire brigade.

“Terrible Tragedy”

“It is with great emotion that I have been informed of the terrible tragedy that took place last night in an apartment in Neuhof. (…) While we await information to determine the causes of this tragedy, I would like to express my condolences to the loved ones of the family, their relatives and friends, and their distressed and shocked neighbors,” the mayor said. of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian.

According to landlord Ophéa, the building is part of a renovation program and renovations are expected to be carried out soon. The people whose apartment has been damaged will be housed elsewhere, it is said.
