Four bodies found in the Lek near Streefkerk

Four deceased persons were taken from the river Lek near Streefkerk in South Holland on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. The police confirm this after reporting from regional broadcaster Rhine estuary Monday. According to Rijnmond, it is probably a father, mother and two adult daughters. The police could do this NRC not yet confirm, the bodies are currently being identified. A car was also recovered from the water.

The police believe it was a “fatal accident” and not a crime, a police spokesperson said. The cause and circumstances are still under investigation. There is no bridge near where the bodies were found, but a ferry crosses the Lek. The car may have hit the water there.

The first body of a woman became found sunday afternoon into the river by hikers, who then called the police. Emergency services would have had trouble getting her out of the water because of the strong current. The body was recovered further down in the port of Groot-Ammers. The woman had been dead for hours.

The other three bodies were found later on Sunday evening and early Monday morning. According to Rijnmond, it concerns a family from Gouda that came from a wedding in Rotterdam on Saturday evening and has been missing ever since. Calls were made on social media to look out for the family.
