Four arrests after a chat trick in broad daylight in the Medemblik nursing home

The police have made four arrests in an investigation into a chat trick in a nursing home in Medemblik. An 89-year-old man was scammed. The four were caught in the act.

The 89-year-old victim receives a call from an unknown man around noon on Monday 10 July. He pretends to be a bank employee. In a cunning way, he – together with three other suspects – eventually manages to loot valuable possessions and cash.

It’s not the first time something like this has happened. West Friesland is burdened by chatter tricks. The (vulnerable) elderly in particular are often the victims. Just last week, when an 83-year-old woman from Hoogkarspel had to give up her wedding rings. Also an 87-year-old woman from Hoorn is robbed of her PIN and bank card in a complex for the elderly at the end of June. The so-called ‘bank employee’ manages to withdraw thousands of euros from her bank account.

More resilient

The suspects are still in custody and their exact role is still being investigated by the police.

The police therefore calls on (grand) children and caregivers to have regular conversations with the elderly to make them more resilient to crime.
