Foster family Poelman: ‘With foster care you offer a child a place where there is love and attention’

It is Foster Care Week and that is why foster care organizations throughout the country are taking action to find new foster families. Foster care Drenthe kicked off the week on Wednesday at the Brink in Assen by placing thirty doormats there. Each doormat represents one wanted foster family in Drenthe. Tjeert and Janneke Poelman from Assen have been foster parents since 2016 and hope to inspire as many other families as possible with their story.

The Poelmans currently have a foster daughter at home. It is their second foster child. To this day, they have not regretted their decision to open their home to their foster children. “There are so many children who need a warm home, we grant them that and you see that it does the children good,” says Janneke Poelman.

“As a foster parent you experience part of a child’s life. Every placement is different, but it basically comes down to the same thing,” says Tjeert Poelman. “The children are in a pinch. These are all situations that are close by and in our own living environment. We offer the children a place where they can grow up safely. Where there is love and attention for them.”
