Fortuna Ehrenfeld: “Glitterschwein” (review & stream)

Martin Bechler is so productive, even his own information has lost track: “Glitzerschwein” is his “(depending on how you count) fifth to eighth album in seven years,” it says. Fortuna Ehrenfeld have now become a band, but of course the songwriter and singer are always the focus. And once again it’s best when it doesn’t turn up too loud. On “Glitzerschwein” the rumbling bar songs keep the balance with the more tender piano ballads – and in the end everything becomes one because Bechler’s voice ties the extremes together. Sometimes the pronounced scratchiness can be annoying if it turns into too rowdy, but most of the time this unmistakable hoarseness gives you a good feeling of familiarity and creates an immediate closeness.

Get rid of the cheap effects and concentrate fully on the melodies

With luck, when Faber grows up, he’ll sound something like Martin Bechler. Although it can also be childish and silly. With jokey pieces like “Kick mich am ass, amore mio!” with an intrusive disco oomph, Luzie goes crazy whether you want it or not. He also has a penchant for swear words. However, for Bechler this does not seem like an artificial provocation, but rather like the inevitable collateral damage of life. In “Queen Of Fucking Everything” it says: “Multiply by zero, everything against zero/ Tired of escalation and fed up with war.” Who doesn’t know that.

There are small spoken word interludes, with “Aufm Park & Ride von Golgatha” a sweet duet with Elin Bell, it doesn’t get boring. A number of songs already indicate the direction in the title – definitely forward, just no standstill: “We propagate excess”, “We need to go maraca”, “We have to move”. The Cologne Philharmonic was already sold out, so will it be on the Waldbühne or in the stadium soon? If Danger Dan can do it, why not! Get rid of the cheap effects, concentrate fully on the melodies – and then be the king of it all.
