Fortuna Düsseldorf too clever – Magdeburg misses coup

For a long time, the promoted team kept up in the duel with the Rhinelanders – but Fortuna was too ripped off in the end.

Clever Düsseldorfers spoiled the start of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite a good performance, FCM had to learn the hard way against Fortuna and lost 2-1 (0-1) in front of 22,288 spectators on Saturday evening. Rouwen Hennings (44./penalty) and Felix Klaus (46.) scored for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Connor Krempicki (50.) only managed the goal.

FCM coach Christian Titz started with two newcomers, Jamie Lawrence in central defense and Mohammed El Hankouri on the right. In a playful way, the FCM followed on from the previous season, started aggressively and immediately put the guests under pressure. They were initially unlucky with the video assistant: a goal was canceled for handball and a penalty kick was canceled for offside. The third VAR decision of the evening brought a hand penalty for the guests, which Hennings converted and turned the game upside down.

Seconds after the restart, the guests increased after Jamie Lawrence lost the ball. After that, Magdeburg seemed quite unsure, but then the blue and white struck back: Krempicki had a lot of space and hit the right angle, which is worth seeing. After that, both teams played an open game, but the really big chances were still missing. Magdeburg lacked the penetrating power, in addition there were the two individual mistakes by Lawrence, which Düsseldorf knew how to rip off.
