Formula E: Wehrlein triumphs at the start

Former Formula 1 driver Pascal Wehrlein underlined his title ambitions in the Formula E electric racing series with victory at the season opener.

The 29-year-old Porsche driver triumphed from pole position on the shortened Grand Prix track in Mexico City, while the second German starter Maximilian Günther (Maserati) came fourth.

“I think we have a very good chance,” said Wehrlein, fourth in the championship last year, before the race weekend in Mexico: “We led for a long time last season, just not when it really counted.”

The former DTM champion dominated on Saturday. Wehrlein took first place on the grid and didn’t let a turbulent early phase of the race with accidents and safety car phases bother him.

This year the calendar includes 16 races spread over ten stations.

One of the double events of the tenth season will take place again in Berlin on the site of the disused Tempelhof Airport, with a new route variant taking place there on May 11th and 12th.
