Williams and Jenson Button will continue to work together in Formula 1 in the future. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the Briton could not be used by the traditional racing team as originally planned. However, team boss Jost Capito makes it clear that Button has an ambassadorial role and is not involved in the development of the vehicle.
“Last year we were limited because of COVID-19,” says the Williams team boss. “He couldn’t come to the team and when he was at the races he had to go on in the Sky bubble – so he couldn’t come. We want him to be more involved in the marketing activities and there are some activities that we are planning .”
The planning for the 2022 season will continue to depend on what is happening in the pandemic and how the teams are allowed to deal with external people in the paddock. “We have a lot planned with him there,” reveals Capito. “But that’s all for marketing and not on the development side.” The team boss once again emphasizes the role of Button at Williams: ambassador and not consultant!
Button is active as a sponsor in the Williams offspring
The 2009 Formula 1 world champion works as an expert in the premier class for the broadcaster “Sky Sports” and always had to go into the company’s bubble at the races he attended to minimize the risk of infection . Button has been associated with Williams since the 2021 season, where he also takes care of young people in motorsport.
Button has also set up its own rally team for the Extreme E championship. At the season opener in Saudi Arabia in 2021, the Brit was still behind the wheel of the electric SUV himself, but after that he concentrated on his position as team boss and handed over the car to rallycross professional Kevin Hansen, who will also be with the team in 2022 drives and shares the vehicle with Extreme E Champion Molly Taylor.
