Bittersweet news for German Formula 1 fans: Sebastian Vettel will miss the start of the premier class in Bahrain. The Aston Martin driver has been infected with the corona virus. Another German will step in for that.
The first Grand Prix of the 2022 Formula 1 season will take place without Sebastian Vettel. As Aston Martin announced on Thursday, the four-time world champion has to pass due to a corona infection. Instead, substitute driver Nico Hülkenberg will take a seat in the AMR22.
According to the racing team, Hülkenberg will already contest the first free practice session on Friday (from 1:00 p.m. in the live ticker).
It is not the first time that the 34-year-old has worked for the former Racing Point team. In 2020 he stepped in three times. The then RP pilot Sergio Pérez failed twice, who – like Vettel now – was suffering from the corona virus.
Once again he drove for Lance Stroll, who was absent with stomach problems. At the Eifel GP, Hülkenberg finished eighth without prior training and with only a few laps in qualifying and was even voted driver of the day.
Aston Martin has not yet given any information on Sebastian Vettel’s health.
