Oscar Piastri succeeds Fernando Alonso at Alpine. This means that five cockpits are still up for grabs in Formula 1.
The 21-year-old Australian will then start alongside Frenchman Esteban Ocon, the team announced on Tuesday (08/02/2022).
It was only announced on Monday that the Spaniard Alonso would switch to rival Aston Martin in 2023. There the 41-year-old replaces the German Sebastian Vettel (35), who wants to end his Formula 1 career after this season.
Champion in Formula 2
Piastri is considered a promising talent. Two years ago he won the title in the junior class Formula 3, in the previous season he was Formula 2 champion. Earlier this season, he had been hired as Alpine’s reserve rider.
Only five cockpits left
Mick Schumacher, who has been under contract with Haas since the 2021 season, had been proposed by Vettel as his successor, but was not considered. The German has not yet secured a cockpit for 2023. Despite a valid working paper at McLaren for the coming year, persistent separation rumors are circulating about the Australian Daniel Ricciardo. According to the current status, five of the 20 main cockpits for 2023 are still up for grabs.
