Formula 1 | Russell explains: This is how Mick Schumacher can best help

As is well known, Mick Schumacher will start the 2023 Formula 1 season as the new test and reserve driver for the Mercedes team. He will be the third man behind regular drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. The latter has already expressed his delight at the new signing on several occasions.

In an interview with the specialist magazine “Auto, Motor und Sport”, the Brit now spoke about how he is looking forward to working with the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher: “I am sure that there are things that we can learn from him”, Russell was initially determined to personally benefit from the new test driver.

“I think it’s important for him to watch how this team works, to watch Lewis and I work with the engineers. It will be useful for him,” continued Russell.

The 24-year-old has only been a regular driver for Mercedes since 2022 and excelled in his first season for the Silver Arrows.

Russell sees Mick Schumacher as a ‘first class driver’

Fourth in the drivers’ standings, Russell had managed to keep his team-mate and seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton in check with 275 to 240 points. Russell also clinched the only win of the season for the German racing team in Brazil in 2022.

He gave Mick Schumacher very precise advice: “If I were in Mick’s shoes, I would work super hard in the simulator here in Brackley and try everything to integrate myself into the team. The simulator is a really important asset for us. […] He has to lock himself in this room and do his rounds.”

Russell emphasized the importance of “first-class drivers who drive in the simulator as often as possible” and thus provide the entire team with important technical details and data. “And Mick is definitely one of them,” added the Englishman.
