The 2023 Formula 1 season was largely a disappointment for Mercedes. Former world champion Nico Rosberg believes his former racing team can make a comeback next year. The Wiesbaden native doesn’t really care whether Lewis Hamilton or another driver ends up at the top.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell go into the last Formula 1 weekend of the season 317 and 389 points behind Max Verstappen, respectively. It is obvious that people in Brackley cannot be satisfied with this. The same goes for the fact that a lot of things have to get better in the 2024 season.
Nico Rosberg is convinced that his ex-employer can turn things around next year – even though the gap to Red Bull is gigantic.
Hamilton Formula 1 World Champion 2024? Rosberg is “neutral”
“We’ve seen moments of brilliance from Mercedes recently, but they lack consistency. But if we look at Austin, they fought for victory there and had the fastest car over the weekend. So we can see that they are starting to do that “To understand the car,” said Rosberg at a sponsor meeting on the sidelines of the Vegas race.
He still believes in the qualities of the Silver Arrows. “Because I was there myself and I know how strong they are. There are still the same people there,” said Rosberg, who “certainly” sees a chance that Lewis Hamilton can fight for the world championship next year.
When asked whether he would be happy about an eighth World Cup title for his former teammate, Rosberg answered much less euphorically. “I would be happy if Mercedes would win because that is my racing family from the past. As far as Lewis is concerned, I am neutral,” the Wiesbaden native gave a small swipe at Hamilton, with whom he had sometimes heated arguments when they were together at Mercedes.
In general, he’s just hoping for an exciting World Championship fight again, Rosberg emphasized in conclusion: “May the best driver win. But when it comes to that, I’m not taking one side.”
